Commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide

- That, recalling General Synod Act 74, June 1995, this Council of General Synod:
- - Encourages Canadian Anglicans to commemorate on Palm Sunday, April 4th (also Refugee Rights Day in Canada), the 10th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, remembering in the prayers of the people or otherwise those who perished and those who survived, involving Rwandans in their remembrance wherever possible;
- - Requests that the Acting Primate write to the Prime Minister of Canada:
- -- Welcoming the House of Commons' declaration of April 7th as "a Day of Remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide....encourag(ing) all Canadians, including the Government, to take appropriate steps on that day to commemorate the genocide and to reflect on its lessons," unanimously adopted on February 24th [2004];
- -- Welcoming the UN General Assembly's resolution "to designate 7 April 2004 as the International Day of Reflection on the genocide in Rwanda;" and
- -- Urging the Government of Canada:
- --- To provide greater official development assistance in support of Rwandan civil society initiatives for justice, reconciliation and reconstruction;
- --- To support international efforts to end impunity and bring to justice those responsible for crimes against humanity in the Great Lakes Region of Africa;
- --- To support international efforts for an end to genocide.
- - Requests the Acting Primate to communicate to the Rwandan partners of The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund and of Partners in Mission our ongoing compassion and solidarity with those who suffered by loss of life or loved ones in the genocide and civil war in Rwanda.
