"This year we have allowed ourselves this brief soliloquy or duoloquy for a particular reason: 'New Theology No. 5' is even more devoted to the new, the 'novum', the not-yet, the pull of the future, than were the earlier volumes in the sequence. .... Yet talk about the future, about hope, about the new, we do. For those whose brains we have picked and those on whom we rely have begun to concentrate on these themes, and they strike us as representing much of the most creative work in theology today. Whether the 'theology of hope' will turn out to be a well-defined and serious movement, we cannot now determine -- let the unfolding future take care of that. But that the 'theology of hope' -- to which most of the selections in this volume are in one way or another directed -- has served as a magnet to attract people of vastly differing approaches is already clear; if not a movement, then at least a tendency or trend is present". -- Intro., p. 8-9.
