- "Charles Thomas Price, whose diary is published herewith, was born in London in 1847. .... In March of 1875 they sailed for Madagascar where he was to stay under the auspices of the London Missionary Society until 1881. .... After his return to England he served as Congregational minister in various towns, last in Reigate (1916-1925), where he died in 1933. .... The diary tells us a great deal about British missionaries, and especially about CTP himself. In a way the strength of the diary is that CTP records his feelings and thoughts the best he can, providing us, so to speak, with a straightforward microcosm of the positive and negative aspects of the missionary effort." -- Preface.
