- "For the past decade church-related efforts in development education have tried to raise with church constituencies and with the public at large the concern for justice within and between nations. They have been concentrated mainly in the affluent nations of the North Atlantic region and of Australasia. During the last few years it has become clear that awareness about justice issues has to lead to relevant political action and that development education is a global concern. Thus the Commission on the Churches' Participation in Development (CCPD), at its meeting in Sofia in 1978, asked that an international consultation be called in 1979 for the purpose of sharing and evaluating past experiences in development education in a variety of countries, reflecting on the relationship between the educational/mobilizing process and actions for justice, trying to discern the theological and pedagogical assumptions which underly specific educational approaches and establishing priority areas for development education work in the eighties. The meeting took place in Cuba from November 4-16, 1979, at the invitation of the Ecumenical Council of Cuba. .... For a group of some 30 development educators from all over the world the Cuban experiments in education, ranging from the famous alphabetization campaign of 1960 to the many successful attempts at integrating work and study, provided valuable insights. During a first week of encounters the group learned a great deal about Cuban society .... During the second week, which was spent at Matanzas Theological Seminary, workshop participants analyzed the Cuban experience and related it to their work in development education. The highlights of the week of encounters are shared in the first part of this report which is presented in the form of a diary. A synopsis of the discussions of the second week and of the group reports is to be found in the second part of this report." -- Intro.
