- "Under this general title [Studies in the Life and Growth of the Younger Churches] a series of studies is at present being undertaken by the Missionary Studies Department of the International Missionary Council and the World Council of Churches -- with special reference to those churches which have come into being in Asia, Africa and Latin America during the last two centuries. The intention is, not to present a general survey of the churches, but rather, in a number of clearly delimited, selected situations, to make studies 'in depth'. .... To this end the central element of this series consists of a number of 'case studies' or studies 'in depth'. The present volume presents the first such study, undertaken during 1956 in Buganda at the invitation of the Bishop of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Leslie Brown". --p. [11].
- "The field-work in connexion with this study, undertaken in 1956, was concentrated upon a few 'parishes' in Buganda. The old kingdom of Buganda is, of course, only a part of the modern territory, comprising many tribes, which has been named after it in the Swahili form, Uganda. What follows, therefore, applies sociologically and ecclesiastically to the kingdom of Buganda alone. Its value lies precisely in this element of concentration, and, eventually, in the contribution it makes to the overall series of studies, from which it is hoped certain major themes will be seen to emerge". -- Author's Preface.
