"The Commission on Marriage and Related Matters of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada requested us in the spring of this year to prepare a commentary on the text of a Canon which the Commission had drafted at the Synod's request. In considering this it did not seem to entirely practical .... It was not so much the text of a particular canon that seemed to require explanation as the general circumstances which must inevitably affect the composition of this or any other canon on marriage in the Anglican Communion. .... We therefore concluded that we could perform a more useful service for our Church by relating some of these issues as specifically as we could to the detailed work of canon law revision. We are not aware that this has been attempted before in print in such a way that it might be useful to the generality of members of Anglican synods who must often be asked to vote on questions demanding something at least a little more than a minimum acquaintance with the theological and legal issues touching the canon law of marriage". -- Foreword.
