"By Kenneth E. Kirk, Bishop of Oxford, Honorary Fellow of St. John's and Trinity Colleges, Oxford".
"Second Edition. Revised and in large part rewritten".
Includes bibliographical references and index.
"The first edition of this book was published in 1933. Within three years it was in many respects completely out of date. .... It was obvious that the book now needed extensive rewriting if it was still to serve any useful purpose. Circumstances, however, made such a course impossible at the moment, and before I could take the matter in hand again the war had broken out. It was perhaps fortunate that these events prevented any attempt to revise the book; for developments which have taken place in the last ten years have once more changed the proportions of the problem (p. v)." "The manuscript of this second edition was already in the printers' hands when the proposals of the Archbishops' Commission on Canon Law for a revised body of Canons was published. A number of the proposals are relevant to our subject, especially Canon 36(2) -- the suggestion of diocesan courts (the bishop and his chancellor) to deal with divorce cases which might have been susceptible to consideration as cases of nullity (cp. infra pp. 121 ff.). It is noteworthy that three of the most distinguished and experienced members of the Commission dissented from this proposal." -- Intro., pp. viii-ix.
