- "The term `laity' has always been problematic, and I believe that we have now come to a dead end with this designation ... When this term is used in the following pages, it simply designates men, women, and children who attempt to live as Christians both in the presence of God and in the midst of the world. Thus, the `ministry of the laity' concerns primarily the human vocation, lived in the light of Christ. Three worldwide human quests will be taken up to examine how Christ responds to them: `The Human Search for Wisdom' as we face the present threat of annihilation of creation -- and the response of Christ the sage. `The Human Cry for Justice' because of the oppressive impact of present economic and political structures -- and what Christ the crucified teaches us in the struggle for justice. `The Human Need for Identity as many cultures and social groups experience a deep crisis of selfhood -- and the way in which Christ the artist can restore God's image in us. .... In the 1950s and 1960s the fourth chapter of Ephesians played an important role in the reflection on the ministry of the laity. This text has been reexamined, and the transcription of a Bible study on it concludes the three studies". -- Intro., pp. 8, 9.
