- "(NCC) In September [1987] Archbishop Desmond Tutu had a nine-day tour of Namibia. At the end of his visit he called for independence in the territory in 1988, the 10th anniversary of the United Nations peace plan for Namibia. Archbishop Tutu attended ecumenical services across the country and visited the war zone at Oniipa. In his final press conference on the visit the Archbishop referred to the pain of war and addressing South Africa, he said, 'You have not won the hearts of the people. Why be regarded, like Hitler in Europe half a century ago, as a feared foreign oppressor, occupying another country by force of arms ?'" Text of entire article.
