- Notes
- "Michael R. Welton admits in his Preface: 'The biographer of Moses Coady and historian of the Antigonish Movement must grapple with its deep mythologization. It is difficult to penetrate beneath the "something added" to the "reality beneath".' Welton worked from documents, many not previously available to the public, to reconstruct his story of a key leader of the economic movement based on co-operation, adult learning, study clubs, and credit unions" (p. 100). "The biography is more than the story of one man; it is the story of the Antigonish Movement. Welton has skilfully presented the life of Coady set in the context of the forces he helped to set in motion in the Depression era. The biographer has peopled his story with Coady's co-workers, friends, and enemies, both within and outside the Movement. Many of these figures find their due in the scheme of the affairs that dominated Coady's life" (p. 101). "When I finished reading the book, which I enjoyed immensely, I felt that the author had fleshed out both Coady and the Movement. And because of, rather than despite of, the revelations of Coady's all-too-human frailties, the core of this book rings true. Welton concludes, Coady's 'developmental, humanist vision is one that withstands the ravages of time .. [and] embodies a central idea that we are in danger of losing but one Coady never let his beloved Nova Scotians and Maritimers forget: 'the world as it is, is not the way it should be'" (p. 101-102).
