- Notes
- A "fascinating biographical consideration of [Robert Addison] one of the most interesting clergymen of the Church of England in Upper Canada prior to 1840" (p. 36). "While the narrative here, divided into twelve short chapters covering 130 pages, is not intended to be particularly scholarly -- there is a distinct lack of detailed, erudite citations -- a basic bibliography and biographical appendix are sufficient to help the authors sketch the place of Anglicanism in Upper Canada in the late eighteenth century. Frequently, they reproduce excerpts of archival texts relating to Addison, rather than paraphrasing and merely offering a citation to some obscure source. This is to be commended" (p. 36). "The authors, Habermehl and Combe, experiences researchers and writers of local and church history in Niagara have succeeded in creating an authoritative account of the fascinating life of Robert Addison, superseding even the entry in the 'Dictionary of Canadian Biography'. A delight to read, fully illustrated, and in a hand-numbered limited edition, this work will prove reliable for years to come" (p. 38).
