- Notes
- The author describes his chance finding of a book, once in the library of Bishop John Travers Lewis, the first bishop of Ontario, in the open stacks of McGill University. He went on to locate 22 books on a list of 42 titles purchased by McGill from the bishop's son, another J.T. Lewis, in 1927. "Bishop Lewis' library, as has been reconstructed so far, was in many ways what one would expect an Anglican bishop's library to be. It was strong in biblical studies and church history, even the Canadiana was largely ecclesiastical in nature. .... Finally, a thorough investigation of the Ontario Diocesan Library would certainly add more titles to Bishop Lewis's library and perhaps confirm his bibliophilic interests. Furthermore, this support of this library is not without significance in itself. The library as it now exists is composed of approximately 470 titles in 800 volumes. It was apparently established in the 1860s by Bishop Lewis and continued to function until the early twentieth century. At least some of the books were the gift of the Associates of Dr. Bray, while others have the bookplate of Bishop John Travers Lewis".
- Pages 58-65 entitled "Lewis Appendix" consist of the 42 titles in the 1927 McGill accession register list for titles purchased from "J.T. Lewis, Esq., Montreal".
