- Notes
- The author, a Volunteer in Mission from the diocese of Toronto, describes her work serving as a pastoral worker in Lima, Peru. At the time of writing Peru is still in the middle of a hostage crisis. Just before Christmas [17 December 1996] a partyat the Japanese ambassador's residence was raided by members of the Revolutionary Movement Tupac Amaru (MRTA), a leftist guerrilla group. She comments that it is difficult to get any analysis or comment from Peruvian sources and that she relies for that on a British weekly newspaper. "The situation has made many Peruvians nervous as they fear a return to the guerrilla violence before 1990 which claimed the lives of thousands and thousands of Peruvians in the city and countryside. .... I would ask that you keep the hostages, the negotiators and the country of Peru in your prayers during this time".
