- Notes
- "Another remarkable feature of 1994 has been the resignation of 232 stipendiary clergy (and around 60 retired, non-stipendiary and other clergy) from the ministry of the Church of England because of their opposition to the promulgation of the Canon authorizing the ordination of women to the priesthood. As yet, the numbers involved remain relatively small -- around 2 per cent of the stipendiary clergy, but 232 is, nevertheless, a significant number, representing the most substantial exodus from the ministry of the Church of England since that of the six bishops and 400 clergy deprived as non-jurors in 1690. About half of those who have resigned are known to have become Roman Catholics, and it is probable that others will join them. There is every indication that further resignations will ensure in future years, and that a similar proportion of those who resign will, sooner or later, become Roman Catholics".
