Notes: "`We all hope that as the People's Republic of China gradually opens to the rest of the world the church in China will also be permitted to have more contact with the universal church,' Pope John Paul II said in his homily during the May 14 Mass during the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Asia. In a message directed to Catholics in mainland China, the pope said: `I wish to express once more my affection and tell you how sorry I am that the bishop of Wanxian and his coadjutor could not come to Rome to take part personally in the synod' (see Origins, Vol. 27, pp. 765)."
