There are comprehensive notes on each of the 120 texts, giving details of publication, suitable tunes, biblical and other references, and a brief commentary. A substantial and informative Foreword, two introductory essays and a selection of short poems, appendices and indexes complete the book. This is a substantial and varied collection, for all who are interested in the development of worship and the hymn-explosion of the last twenty years. It is also a book of reference for those who work professionally with hymns and hymnody in the worship of the Church". -- back cover.
This volume is the first of three editions of Dudley-Smith's hymns. The other two volumes are 'Songs of Deliverance' c1988 and 'A Voice of Singing' c1993. The "Cumulative index of subjects" and "Cumulative index of first lines" in the last volume 'A Voice of Singing' refer not only to that collection, but also to texts found in 'Lift Every Heart' and in 'Songs of Deliverance'. "They thus form a complete subject index, and a complete index of first lines, to all my hymn texts up to August 1992. TDS". -- Note on Table of Contents, p. of 'A Voice of Singing'.
