This volume is largely the product of a consultation on the theme "Towards a Common Understanding of the Theological Concepts of Laity/Laos : The People of God" which was held 7-10 March 1997 at LeCenacle, in Geneva.
"Through a variety of articles, surveys and statements, this book gives an account of the work the World Council of Churches has done during the last two decades on issues related to the laity." It affirms "the missionary role of the laity, in the spirit of messages from WCC assemblies such as the one from New Delhi which said: `The real letter written to the world today does not consist of words. We Christian people, wherever we are, are a letter from Christ to the world'." -- Preface, p. [vii].
