- "I noticed some letters in the March [2016] issue complaining about diocese divesting from fossil fuels when the oil industry is suffering and people are losing their jobs. From an investment point of view, it makes sense to pull your investments from failing industries and put your money into the sunrise industries. The downturn in the oil industry is self-inflicted. It is poor management and economics to continue to produce a product for which there is a glut in the market and demand is dropping. The Alberta government is also to blame for not taking the surplus they reaped during the time of plenty and investing it in industries that are not dependent on oil. What do you suppose will happen to oil prices and the oil industry when in five to 10 years the highest volume of vehicles sold will be either electric or hydrogen driven ? .... For the church to continue to be meaningful in today's society, we need to do what is right and sometimes make unpopular decisions and changes. Supporting the continued use of fossil fuels isn't wise when it is responsible for so much harm to the environment".
