- "Maori Spirituality in the New Millennium is the particular aspect I am developing to present as my Ph.D. thesis and to clarify what it means for modern day Maori, that is contemporary Maori Spirituality. What is it and where should it lead us. I envisage I will have more success in this effort that I did back in the year 2000 when I wrote 30,000 words to try to explain Maori Spirituality". "For the Maori people, it is much more that just 'people', in spite of the emphasis of such 'whakatauki' (proverbs) as 'he tangata te mea nui' (the people are the most important thing). It must of necessity include the environment and all of its spiritual connotations. It is my affinity to the land and my universe. It is my identity of who I am and from where I come. My spirituality is in my 'whakapapa', my genealogy and it connects me to my past. It connects me to Papatuanuku' (the land) and it connects me to 'Rangi' (the Cosmos). I am a child of the Universe 'Maunga' (Maungapohatu) and of 'Hine Pukohu Rangi' (The Mist Maiden). I am one with the seasons of the year, the land, the sea, the four winds and ultimately with the Cosmos. I have a sense of being one with all creation and therefore with the creator."
