- Notes
- Julia Riggs is a Volunteer in Mission from the Diocese of Toronto working at a day care operated by the Anglican Church on 27 de Julio road in the community of San Juan de Miraflores in Lima, Peru. "The church operates all day Sunday with Bible classes for the local children in the morning and a service of worship in the evening. During the week, the church sanctuary is used as a classroom for the kids of the student centre. It is a brightly lit room with benches, chairs and a black board. At the back of the building is a large room that is used for the children of the day care. The day care and the student centre are both operated by the Iglesia Cristiana Episcopal del Peru. However, in a practical sense, each runs independently." "The student centre is organized to help approximately 70 school age children. The state-run local school does not have enough teachers to offer a day-long program, so there is a morning and afternoon stream. Some students go to school and then come to the student centre to eat lunch and study, while others eat lunch at the centre, go to school, and then come back to study. .... The centre is staffed by a number of people from the neighbourhood, helping with the cooking, organizing recreational activities, and running the tutoring program. Most of the students are sponsored by a foreign charitable organization and the church supports those who are not. All told, there are almost 120 people from the area who are affected by the Anglican Church at 27 de Julio, which I would offer as a wonderful example of Christian love".
