A former Court of Appeals judge, Sir Michael took up his new position in March . He is also Honorary Vice President of the Boys' Brigade and is a strong supporter of the social service work done by churches. He was saddened by the recent fire which destroyed the historic Otaki church in Rangiateai [known as the Maori Cathedral], which his wife's ancestor, Bishop Hadfield, was instrumental in building with Te Rauparaha, and has offered his help in the rebuilding of the church".
