- Notes
- The author is a Volunteer in Mission from the diocese of Calgary serving in Pelotas, Brazil. She works in a children's institute and school which looks after 30 children, most of them girls who would otherwise receive no education. "The mothers of these children are working or looking for work and the children are left alone at home caring for each other. The older ones will spend most of their time on the streets, where they are easy prey to drugs, prostitution and other kinds of violence. We hope that by giving them a place during the week when they have no one to look after them, and teaching the mothers that violence is not the way to educate a child, we are helping them and their families and maybe, just maybe, their lives will be a little brighter".
