- Table Group Discussions on the Residential Schools Issue
- Members identified the following opportunities arising from a settlement with the Government of Canada:
- - Engages others in the solutions
- - Responds to racism
- - Brings the gospel to life
- - Continues our mission
- - Provides a heads up on staying clear of further suits
- - Keeps government from breaking the corporate "veil"
- - Decreases the opportunity to go after other assets
- - Quantifies in a finite way what looked infinite
- - Clarifies the work of fundraising
- - Meet our moral responsibility
- - Clarifies the picture of what is ahead
- - Enables us to keep faith with goal of healing and reconciliation
- - Moves us into position of talking about "new life"
- - Increases platform/audience about Aboriginals
- - Increases integrity to speak
- - Frees us to return to forms of advocacy, walking together
- - Increases chance to feel collegiality and partnership with others
- - Liberates our energy
- - Provides opportunities for "teaching" in the event of backlash

- Members identified the following challenges facing dioceses as a result of a settlement with the Government of Canada:
- - Severe financial challenges
- - Burden on major proportional givers
- - Need to explain rationale for shift from "corporate veil" to "corporate responsibility"
- - Reluctance to fund abuse settlement
- - Need to be clear what "settlement" means
- - How to deal with the "buts"
- - Being sensitive to Diocesan councils for native ministries in the light of New Agape
- - Negative impact of survey
- - Incipient racism
- - How to make clear the alternative to a settlement
- - Uncertainty about resolution of controversial issues i.e. same sex unions
- - How to show the human face of General Synod -- services provided, partnership
- - Fear that we recreate "us vs. them" healing and reconciliation
- - This is easy to say, hard to make real
- - The impact of the ruling in Province of Alberta exonerating General Synod, therefore no need for agreement
- - That this is not just another fundraising campaign
- - We have a challenge to live baptismal covenant
- - How to explain that the limit on dollars is not shirking responsibilities
