- Prologue
- The Bishop of Saskatoon presented the following statement on behalf of the Commission:
- "Since the last meeting of this Council, the Commission on Marriage and Related Matters has been chiefly concerned with preparation of the Forms required for use under Canon XXVII. As far as possible, these have been composed so as to match the procedures envisaged in the Canon, and to provide guidance for incumbents and applicants in completing the Forms. Four Forms are now available; the remaining one required, concerning with presumption of death, has still to be prepared. The Commission desires to record its gratitude and the indebtedness of the Church to those of its Members including the Hon. Mr. Justice J.C. Cartwright, Professor C.R. Feilding and Professor H.R.S. Ryan, who have done the greater part of the detailed work necessary.
- The Commission reports that the suggestion, made at the last Meeting of the Council, that reproduction of the Forms should be undertaken independently by each diocese, has not proved practicable. There was pressure from some dioceses for immediate availability of a supply of Forms. Not every diocese has facilities for adequate reproduction. As preparation proceeded it was evident that there was considerable risk of errors in transcription and resulting confusion if the Forms were reproduced in varying styles and by different methods across the country. The Commission has therefore arranged with the Anglican Book Centre to produce and sell the Forms at ten cents a copy, under a plan which is not expected to involve the Centre in any deficit.
- The Education Committee of the Commission has considered the manner in which expenses of local ecclesiastical matrimonial commissions may be met, and is reporting its findings to all diocesan bishops.
- From the General Secretary the Commission has heard with gratification of the receipt of a large volume of letters from many parts of the Anglican Communion expressing gratitude to the Anglican Church of Canada for its work, evident in the new Canon XXVII, concerning Christian understanding of and discipline governing Holy Matrimony."
