- Text of motion
- Be it resolved that this General Synod:
- (a) Affirms the essential unity of the act of Christian Initiation consisting of Baptism (with water in the name of the Trinity) together with the laying-on-of-Hands and first Communion, by which a person is reborn of water and the Spirit and incorporated as a full member of the Church, sharing in the Body of Christ.
- (b) Directs the Doctrine and Worship Committee to continue its study of Christian Initiation and if possible to recommend to the next General Synod appropriate liturgies and pastoral procedures to implement this principle.
- (c) Approves the interim use, at the discretion of Diocesan Bishops, of experimental liturgies which combine Baptism (for candidates not already Baptized), the Laying-on-of-Hands, and first Communion, as recommended by the Task Force on Christian Initiation, under these conditions:
- i) The Bishop should officiate;
- ii) Children should first receive Communion at an age deemed suitable by their parents in consultation with the parish priest and in the context of the life of the parish;
- iii) for young children, the preparation and commitment required by the present Confirmation rite are not expected; the parents, however, should receive careful instruction, and the children will, at an appropriate age, be given the opportunity for a public affirmation of faith in and commitment to Christ.
- (d) Directs that these resolutions, together with the report of the Task Force on Christian Initiation, be referred for consideration and counsel to the Anglican Consultative Council at its forthcoming meeting.
- After direction on voting procedure had been sought from the Assessors, the Primate put the revised Resolutions on Christian Initiation, section by section, to the House.
- Section (a) was ADOPTED IN BOTH HOUSES.
- Section (b) was ADOPTED IN BOTH HOUSES.
- Section (c) was DEFEATED IN THE HOUSE OF BISHOPS.
- Section (d) was ADOPTED IN BOTH HOUSES.
