- Text of motion
- That the twentieth session of the General Synod of The Anglican Church of Canada, meeting at Ste. Anne de Bellevue, gives thanks to Almighty God for the fruitful ministry and self-sacrificing life of the Rt. Rev. William Charles White, D.D., Bishop in the Church of God, during the whole of the last half-century. As Bishop White approaches the fiftieth anniversary of his consecration, this Synod gratefully remembers that he was not only the first Bishop of Honan, but was in a large measure responsible for laying the foundation of an indigenous Anglican Church in China. His insistence that a Chinese Church be left free to choose its own Bishop led to one of the most progressive steps in the history of our missionary strategy. His characteristic humility and generous concern for the Chinese Church was well illustrated in his handing over the chief pastorate to Dr. Philip Lindel Tsen, and in becoming for a time the latter's assistant. Since his retirement, Bishop White has made a significant contribution as Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Toronto and as Head of the Chinese Section of the Royal Ontario Museum. The Synod records its gratitude to God for the life and work of this great missionary statesman and prays for God's continued blessing upon him. RESOLVED.
