- Text of motion
- "That this General synod express appreciation to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for their statement `Ethical Reflections on the Economic Crisis', particularly for the moral judgment that `the primary emphasis be placed on combatting unemployment'; and to the Primate for his commentary of January 1983 in which he appealed to us to:
- 1. recognize the seriousness of the present economic crisis, and to acknowledge the human suffering thus caused;
- 2. examine our past and present conduct and ask if our actions are intensifying the problems or contributing to their solution;
- 3. analyse seriously the complex economic issues that fact us in Canada, and in the global village in which we all live;
- 4. seek together alternative social and economic visions and strategies with which to address the issues;
- 5. acknowledge that such new visions and strategies, if they are useful, will call for fundamental re-ordering of our basic values and priorities;
- 6. reaffirm with the Gospel, that life depends not so much on the things we possess as on the quality of our relationships with God, with each other, and with the rest of God's creation." CARRIED Act 39
