- STATEMENT OF EDITORIAL POLICY AND TERMS OF REFERENCE
- Canadian Churchman is the national newspaper of the Anglican Church of Canada, but it is not the official voice of the church. As an independent newspaper it is encouraged to state its own mind in editorials, to present its news and features responsibly, without fear or favour, but with taste and a human touch.
- Canadian Churchman has many roles and ideals, as does the Church itself. These include:
- - To inform the Canadian Anglican community about its affairs, problems and progress in the light of the mission of the Church.
- - To stimulate the interest and courage of Church people by a vital editorial presentation of our faith and its relevance to man, his needs and his problems.
- - To give the Anglican community a fair picture of the thoughts and activities of other religious denominations in Canada and of the Church and religion abroad.
- - To observe, report and comment on any Canadian or world matters which seem to the Editor to bear on the spiritual and general education and welfare of people - with emphasis on Canada.
- - To recognize its international readership, influence and reputation throughout the Anglican communion by providing Anglicans of other countries with informal comment on Canadian, North American and international concerns, inside and outside the institutional church.
- Canadian Churchman is published by a Board of Trustees responsible to the National Executive Council and General Synod.
- The Board is composed of two bishops, four clergymen and four laymen, all elected by Synod from among Synod members; and four laymen, not necessarily members of Synod, appointed by the Primate.
- Ex-officio members of the Board are the Primate, the General Secretary and General Treasurer of the Synod, the Executive Director of Program, Planning and Research and the Editor of Living Message.
- The Board elects its own chairman and secretary and the General Treasurer of Synod is its treasurer.
- The Board meets twice a year. It reports to each meeting of General Synod and to National Executive Council and presents its budget to that Council.
- The Editor is appointed by the National Executive Council on recommendation of the Board of Trustees. The Editor is provided freedom to exercise his editorial judgment within a broad editorial policy established by the Board and adopted by National Executive Council.
- The Editor is the chief officer of Canadian Churchman, decisive in employment, control of staff and carrying out the Board's principles. The duties of the General Manager include responsibility in the fields of printing, publishing, circulation and advertising.
