- Prologue
- Dr. Broadwell presented the Report on behalf of the Board of Trustees.
- Financial figures of the 1975 budget released for the year were $369,822 compared to the estimated budget of $378,000. The apportionment support required for production of Canadian Churchman in 1975 dropped from $258,000 that had been estimated to $219,928. In April, Canadian Churchman moved its typesetting and printing operations to Golden Graphics of Toronto and Signal Star Publishing Ltd. in Goderich, Ontario respectively and a two-year contract was prepared with each of the firms. As a result of a motion of NEC, November, 1975 concerning the church calendar the members of the Canadian Church Calendar production committee met to discuss the concern that had been raised and submitted its report to the Board. Board members noted their approval with the increasing popularity of the calendar as shown in the rising sales and drew to the attention of the National Executive Council as presented by the Calendar Production Committee:
- 1. That the sales of the Canadian Church Calendar have increased since the "Creation-theme" church calendar of 1974. This year, the highest market was reached with 335,000 calendars printed for the churches as compared to 275,000 in 1973. Committee members agreed that this reflects without any doubt the increasing acceptance and use by Christian families across Canada for a kind of church calendar of present theme and format.
- 2. That the sales of the church calendar generates $250,000 for mission enterprises, both on the local and national level, of the participating churches, thus assisting in the mission work of the church.
- 3. That joint production of the calendar by the Anglican and United churches, and in co-operation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is an important principle that must be continued, especially in the light of General Synod's commitment last year.
- 4. That a continuing professional quality of photographs must be maintained in future calendars. Members of the committee agreed that photographs for the months in which Easter and Christmas are celebrated should closely reflect the Gospel of Incarnation and Resurrection.
- In response to a request from Qu'Appelle Diocesan Council and from the House of Bishops, the Board of Trustees and staff of Canadian Churchman are preparing a statement of general editorial policy and code of ethics. The statement of the role and responsibility of Canadian Churchman will be examined at the Board's next meeting in November and will be reported at the next meeting of the National Executive Council.
- It was announced that the Canadian Churchman had won three first-place awards among North American religious publications. The awards were made at the annual meeting of the Associated Church Press.
- Text of motion
- That a letter of commendation and happiness be sent from this Council to the Canadian Churchman. CARRIED
- Notes
- Questions and comments were requested. The discussion that followed centred mainly around the calendar. It was felt that to maintain the high standard that has now been reached care must be taken concerning any changes. If any church member wishes to submit ideas (pictures) that reflect the life of the gospel the Calendar Production Committee would be more than happy to take them under consideration. There was also some discussion on the general editorial policy and mention was made of some negative articles and the editorial on China.
- The Primate expressed his appreciation to the staff of the Canadian Churchman for the extra work and support they have given.
