- Prologue
- The principles outlined in the Primate's letter of November 1987 on Free Trade were noted and the matter discussed.
- Text of motion
- That the National Executive Council affirm:
- i. that trade issues should be assessed not only for the material advantages that may accrue to every Canadian, but also for the effects on intellectual, cultural and spiritual values;
- ii. that the Primate be commended for placing the Canada/U.S. trade issues on the agenda of the Anglican Church of Canada and for the principles cited in his letter of November 1987, by which the issue may be tested;
- iii. since the agreement does not appear to be congruent with these principles and appears to be seriously flawed, we call on the federal government to reassess Canada's commitment and to examine alternative proposals which consider the total needs of our entire society, rather than being shaped predominantly by market forces.
- It was agreed that this motion should be `voted on' section-by-section.
- Section i. CARRIED #10-05-88
- Section ii. CARRIED #11-05-88
- Section iii. CARRIED #12-05-88
