- Notes
- Director of Global Relations, Dr. Andrea Mann, updated Council on the work of the Canadian Companions of Jerusalem Advisory Committee, a committee established by CoGS in a previous triennium. In the presentation, Council heard how the committee came to be, the work they have undertaken, and the work ahead. Highlights included the following:
- The Canadian Companions of Jerusalem is a national, voluntary body of members of The Anglican Church of Canada drawn together in common concern and support for the well-being of the church in Jerusalem. In the presentation, Council heard how the committee came to be, the work they have undertaken, and the work ahead.
- Since the Canadian Companions of Jerusalem launched in 2012, more than 150 individuals, parishes, dioceses, and church organizations have become members.
- An Advisory Committee comprised of nine members oversees activities, and membership is endorsed by Council. The Primate is an ex-officio member. Copies of the terms of reference were circulated during the presentation.
- Through annual Companions’ fees, donations, and Jerusalem Sunday offerings between the years 2014 and 2018, more than $96,000 has been raised to support several medical ministries of the diocese, including the Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre for Children with Disabilities and the Ahli Arab Hospital, Gaza.
- The next Jerusalem Sunday will take place on June 2, 2019.
- The Advisory Committee has discerned that it is time to plan next steps for continued growth in interest and involvement among Canadian Anglicans for supporting their counterparts in Jerusalem. This will include deeper roots in local dioceses, parishes, and institutions such as cathedrals, colleges, youth programs, and pilgrimages. Expanding the membership of the Advisory Committee is another part and, in accordance with the terms of reference, that Council endorses appointment of members, a motion was included in the report from Global Relations. The motion was put before Council and discussion ensued on the individual they were being asked to endorse. After discussion, the motion was adopted by consensus.
- At the end of the presentation, Council had the opportunity to respond to a series of questions about the Canadian Companions of Jerusalem. Discussion followed in table groups and responses turned in to Dr. Mann.
