- Administrative / Biographical History
- The Columbia Coast Mission was founded in 1904 on the British Columbia coast by John Antle, a Newfoundland priest, deep-sea navigator and yachtsman. Antle was commissioned by the Dioceses of Columbia and New Westminster to explore the possibilities of a mission among the lumber camps on the islands and mainland of northern B.C. In his report to the Church committee, Antle proposed that a hospital mission ship work from a centrally placed hospital on shore, a circulating library be established and a magazine be published monthly for the mission to reach the loggers. The only possible way to service the area was by boat and in 1905, the Missionary Society of the Anglican Church of Canada gave a grant to cover the cost of Antle's first mission ship "Columbia". This ship served as a dispensary, a consulting room, an emergency ward or an ambulance, a travelling library and a chapel. In a few short years as superintendent, Antle had established seven mission ships and five mission hospitals in the area. The mission provided both physical and spiritual service to the isolated communities. It was incorporated in 1907 in partnership with the Dioceses of B.C. and New Westminster. In 1975, New Westminster formally withdrew from the Mission's administration. By 1953, hospital operations had ceased and service by boat followed in 1970. In 1972, the Mission joined in a cooperative air ministry with the Alert Bay Marine Mission of the United Church of Canada which by 1977 was called the North Island Air Ministry. The Columbia Coast Mission had withdrawn from this partnership by 1982. Currently, the Mission distributes various funds held in its name.
