- "At the World Council of Churches Assembly in Amsterdam, 1948, it was resolved that 'the Assembly recognizes the need for more detailed study by the World Council of Churches of the many complex problems which exist in the field of relations between Christians and Jews'. In order to follow up this resolution, in March 1949, the Right Rev. Bishop Stephen Neill, who at the time was Associate General Secretary of the W.C.C., called a Committee Meeting of representatives interested in this subject, for preliminary discussion and formulation of plans. It was recommended by that meeting that a volume on the Church and the Jewish people should be prepared for publication under the leadership of Bishop Neill. A rough outline of the subjects that required to be treated was drawn up, and possible authors of the different chapters were recommended. In the spring of 1951, however, Bishop Neill, owing to his other duties in the W.C.C., found it necessary to relinquish the responsibility for the projected volume." "The volume was initiated under the auspices of the World Council of Churches but is now sponsored by the International Missionary Council's Committee on the Christian Approach to the Jews". -- Preface.
