- "The central thesis of this book is given in its title: mission, understood in the perspective of the kingdom of God, allows -- even demands -- total freedom to serve that kingdom, to participate in its announcement and in its manifestation. A recognition of this Christian freedom could generate untapped resources of imagination and energies in the churches; it could save us from frustrating discussions around secondary issues and provide unity for the most diverse forms of the church missionary vocations in the service of Jesus, the Servant King. This book is in two distinct parts. The first part, a biblical, theological discussion of the kingdom of God and its missionary implications, begins with a reference to several situations where churches are confronting difficult choices as they make missionary decisions. This is followed by an analysis of the world ecumenical discussion on missionary priorities during the last twelve years, highlighting the values that are at stake, both in local situations and in ecumenical dialogue. The biblical symbol of the kingdom of God, seen as the focal point of Jesus' ministry, is presented as the basic theological category in consideration of the mission of the church. .... The second part introduces a series of articles, written approximately during the same period as is covered in the survey of international discussion, where the basic hypothesis of this book has been explored and discussed". -- Intro.
