- "The last six years of U.M.C.A., before its merger with U.S.P.G. on the 1st January, 1965, were the peak years of the African Independence Revolution. The missionary leaders in Africa had always looked for the day of African rule and independence, but were certainly taken by surprise at the speed of its coming". -- p. 1.
- "'Central Africa' of August 1963 carried on its front page a news-flash from the General Secretary, dated 18th July, and saying: 'Today the General Council of U.M.C.A. has passed a unanimous resolution recommending that I and my senior staff begin to discuss with the Secretary of S.P.G. and his senior staff the possibility of uniting our two societies .. the governing body of S.P.G. also met today and passed a similar resolution'. It took eighteen months of praying and planning, including a lot of palavar with the lawyers, before the merger was effected: but on 1st January 1965 the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel came into being". -- p. 8.
