- "Since 1978 the Advisory Council for the Church's Ministry has discussed some aspects of ministerial strategy at each meeting. In November 1981 it was decided to ask the Chief Secretary, Canon John Tiller, to produce a report which would have the unity of one person's view and also take into account the various discussions which have taken place." -- Foreword.
- The author "draws on his experience after five years as Chief Secretary to ACCM to take a long-term view of the direction which the ministry of the Church of England should take in the future. His report takes account on the one hand of the declining numbers of stipendiary clergy and on the other of the remarkable growth of lay ministry which has taken place in recent years. He considers what this means for our understanding of the Church, and examines the concept of 'shared ministry' which sees every Christian as having a particular calling to fulfil in collaboration with others. He asks what the role of the ordained ministry should be in such a partnership". -- back cover.
