- "The Hip Hop Prayer Book originated out of a concern for evangelism at Trinity Episcopal Church in the South Bronx. .... Although the South Bronx is beginning to get back on its economic feet, the neighbourhood is still among the poorest in the city. Children and youth are particularly at risk. What is the best way to reach out to them ? The answer has proven to be the same that the church gave in the sixteenth century when the prayer book and the bible were first printed in English as opposed to Latin: We reach out to them in their own vernacular. And so HipHopEMass was born. .... I need to emphasize that this prayer book is not meant to be trendy. It's meant to be welcoming to those for whom the rhythms of rap are more comforting than the motets of William Byrd. That is not to say that rappers do not sometimes appreciate Byrd, but for them HipHopEMass is a gateway into the Episcopal tradition and into the life of the community of faith. For that reason, this book attempts to be a translation as opposed to a revision of what we understand as our order for Liturgy. The translations were done painstakingly by a team of people who have worked to be faithful and accurate. .... None of this would have happened without the vision of the unlikely Poppa T., aka The Reverend Timothy Holder, whose willingness to take risks for the sake of the gospel is an example to us all". -- Foreword, pp. vii-viii.
