- "Professor La Violette's book tells of what happened in the course of the recent war to some of the humbler victims of the aggressive policies of Japan, viz. the 24,000 persons of Japanese race whose homes lay in Canada. In describing their fate no attempt is made to pass judgement on the wartime policy of the Canadian government which required the removal from a Defence Zone in British Columbia of all persons of Japanese race and in this matter treated Japanese nationals and citizens of Canada alike". "Nor is any attempt made to pass judgement on the subsequent decision, made in the hour of victory, by which the men, women, and children who had been removed from their homes were assured that, subject to not being allowed to congregate in British Columbia where these homes lay, they would be justly treated; but were not .... To such citizens a `restitutio in integrum' was due. But none was offered". -- Preface, p. [v].
