- "I come from a society that has been deprived, discriminated against, oppressed and marginalised. What I found most attractive about Jesus Christ was just how he identified with those who belonged to such a group of persons. It was heart-warming that he actually sat at table with those whom society of the time considered scum, those whom it despised and vilified -- the prostitutes, the sinners and tax-collectors. What Jesus did was to say they belonged, they were insiders too, not strangers, not aliens. I found that to be a wonderfully affirming characteristic of Our Lord -- he came so that those who were excluded should henceforth be included, those who were apart should come together. That seems to me to have been at the heart of His message: 'I, if I be lifted up, will draw all to me' (p. [ix])". "If the church, after the victory over apartheid, is looking for a worthy moral crusade, then this is it: the fight against homophobia and heterosexism. I pray that we will engage in it with the same dedication and fervour with which we showed against the injustice of racism, so that we may rehabilitate the gospel of Jesus Christ in the eyes of many who have been deeply hurt and whose testimony we read in these pages. `Aliens in the Household of God' will enable us to come to the struggle as informed combatants" (p. [x]). -- Foreword.
