- "The mass media proclaim the imminent death of the family, but the churches refuse to accept this, and try to rally around the youth, young couples and inexperienced parents. Some of the churches' effort is going into family education and counselling based on shared faith and on a participatory problem-solving approach commonly called pastoral care of the family. Since 1972 the Family Education Programme of the WCC has been facilitating church-related programmes that seek to develop pastoral care of the families through participatory reflection and action, mainly in the third world. The insights that have emerged from the experiences of these programmes have rarely been articulated at a worldwide level. This volume represents one of the first attempts at doing so, and we thank our contributors for taking the plunge with us." In the first section, this volume presents the cultural, historical and sociological context of family life and its pastoral care in the third world. The examples chosen are selective, but we hope the diversity will help to illustrate the amazing variation in the contexts within which people strive to build Christian families. In the second section, the book discusses some special issues in pastoral care of the family in developing countries: polygamy, youth counselling youth and child-spacing. Again this list is not exhaustive. But we hope the significance of the subjects treated will compensate for the lack of comprehensiveness". -- Foreword, pp. [vii], viii.
