- "The attention of the world has again been focused on the Holy Land and the Palestinian/Israeli conflict as a result of the Palestinian intifada ("shaking off") which began December 8, 1987. Sincere efforts for peace in the region have been developing in North America along with this renewed interest. A group of 14 Canadians of diverse backgrounds recently spent 24 days in the Middle East to learn more about the situation. .... the plight of the Palestinian Christians, over 80% of whom have emigrated from Jerusalem since the 1967 occupation by the Israelis, highlights the current tensions in the Holy Land and reminds us that the peoples of the region are embroiled in a bitter and destructive conflict. Realistically, this short visit could achieve little more that to serve as an introduction to the issues. However, we became acutely aware of the gravity of the conflict and the danger it poses to the peoples of the Middle East and the rest of the world. At the same time, the expression of an earnest desire by so many local people on all sides of the issue for a just and lasting peace left us hopeful that hostilities could give way to reconciliation". -- Preface.
