- "The subject and study of this book -- the language of liturgy -- are no longer new for the Episcopal Church. .... The content of this book is noticeably different. Previous volumes presented the new services in their entirety, to introduce them more easily to worshipping congregations. In this volume, the worship materials are offered as resources to supplement existing Rite II services of the 'Book of Common Prayer'. .... The first intent of this book, then, is to provide optimum flexibility in planning worship with supplemental liturgical materials. A second intent, no less important than the first, is that brief reference materials be as easily accessible as possible. Instead of being contained in a separate volume, as before, the educational commentary is here bound together with the new or suggested texts. An updated bibliography directs the interested worshipper to further educational resources". -- Preface, pp. 5, 7.
