- In this book the author explores three pastoral paradigms. "Pastors who operate according to a Traditional paradigm, try to return things to 'the way they were'. The goal is safety, the path is right doing, and the role of the pastor is surrogate parent. The Individualistic pastor, valuing innovation, encourages autonomy. 'To thine own self be true'. The Negotiating pastor's style is collaborative and flexible. Working through differences toward convenanted relationship, this pastor values both clarity of role and shared responsibility. When we are aware of the paradigms from which we operate, we'll be able to work more effectively with those who don't share them. Joining family systems and theological understandings. Burton's insights speak helpfully to dilemmas in pastoral care and congregational conflict". -- inside front cover.
