- "At the last meeting of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches held in Moscow, USSR, 16-27 July 1989 a plenary session -- proposed by the Commission for the Churches' Participation in Development -- was devoted to the issue of World Poverty. This lively two-hour session was chaired by WCC President Dame Nita Barrow of Barbados and presentations were given by Bishop Federico Pagura and Dr. Bob Goudzwaard. Bishop Pagura is from Argentina and is chairperson of CLAI -- the Latin America Council of Churches. Dr. Bob Goudzwaard from the Netherlands is professor of economics at the Free University of Amsterdam. Bishop Pagura presented the local reality of poverty, giving a `micro' analysis of how poverty affects people : families, women and children; and to explain what the human costs are. Dr. Goudzwaard then followed with the `macro' approach on world developments that have lead to and aggravated world poverty, indicating alternative ways forward at the international level to promote human development". -- Foreword, p. 4.
