- The Bible speaks universal words of life which are the same wherever they are read. But the context in which those words are read, imagined and interpreted differs from one culture to another. The slum dweller in Manila who has never seen a sheep has problems when told that Jesus is the good shepherd. How does the person whose staple food is rice understand the phrase, 'our daily bread ?' Out situation determines our perception; the cultural habitat of our lives gives us a unique way of seeing the world" [p. 7]. .... This brings us to the basis for selecting the art contained in this book. The Asian Christian Art Association decided to proceed with the publication of a collection of art works on the Bible with the provision that three criteria be maintained: 1. The art work must be of high professional quality. 2. It must deal with a recognizable Biblical theme. 3. It should have an 'Asian character' of expression. The editors set to work to shift through a mountain of possible art works. Well over 1000 art works were considered for publication and, after much consideration these were reduced to the final 100 art works which appear in this volume" [p. 10]. -- Intro.
