- "Healing has played a central role in the work of Christian mission, but it is many years since a major ecumenical study of the issues facing medical missions took place. Yet no part of the work of missions has more questions to meet at the present time. This small booklet records the beginning of an attempt to wrestle with some of them. At a meeting in 1962 the Commission on World Mission of the Lutheran World Federation decided to invite the Division of World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches to join with it in a study of medical missionary questions. ... A full record of the discussion at Tubingen is not available, but it has been decided to publish some of the preparatory and connected papers, along with the statement itself. The reader will note that the background papers really do not lead up to the Statement, though they form its background. The gap between the two is an indication of the fact that something happened at Tubingen which went beyond the preparatory material". -- Preface.
