- Canon John Peterson attended the two week long General Synod of the Church of Melanesia which began 20 October 2002. Among the decisions of the synod was one to ordain women to all three orders of ministry. "This decision, however, is the first stage of a lengthy process required to change the Constitution. The next stage will be for each of the eight Diocesan Synods to consent, which would be followed by a full report being received at the next General Synod meeting in 2005". A Eucharist at the synod also marked the official end of the Melanesian Brotherhood's involvement with the Royal Solomon Police Force as part of the official Peace and Reconciliation process on Guadalcanal. The Brothers are not, however, withdrawing from their general ministry of peace and reconciliation.
