- Notes
- "While the author states, in passing, that increase in numbers is not the only way to measure Christian growth, it is this criterion that is used continually in the book. Thus 'recession' in the mainline churches from the 60's to the 90's is illustrated with statistics from church records of declining congregations, and the evidence for `recovery' is found in larger congregations, expanding buildings and burgeoning budgets". The reviewer questions whether this is in fact "an accurate view of the real life of the churches in the past four decades" suggesting that while there has been a decline in numbers the churches have struggled to come to overcome racism, recognize the equality of women in membership and ministry, etc. The reviewer considers that these challenges have resulted in a renewed and active church whose actions may have caused it to lose some members but which itself strives to live the challenge of the Gospel.
