"The present selection from the writings of Roland Allen is designed as a companion volume to 'Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours ?' (first published 1912, revised 1927, and now in its fifth edition) and 'The Spontaneous Explosion of the Church and the Causes which Hinder it' (first published 1927, and now in its fourth edition), both also published by the World Dominion Press. It contains full or abbreviated texts of those of his other writings which, after careful study and discussion, seemed likely to be most useful. They have all been long out out of print, and most of them are now unobtainable even to persistent advertisers. Some editing has been necessary; but we have distinguished carefully between our work and Allen's". -- Foreword.

"Dr. Paul Loffler, as a member of the staff of the World Council of Churches Division of World Mission and Evangelism, has been engaged on a full-time basis over the past two years in both study and action in the field with which this pamphlet deals. It is a subject which is being increasingly and rightly regarded as of great importance for Churches in every part of the world. It is also one in which confusion often exists". -- Editorial Notice.
"A decade ago the meeting of the International Missionary Council at Willingen challenged Christians and Churches throughout the world with the following statement: 'We believe that God is calling the Church to express its mission not only through foreign missionaries sent by the boards, but also through an increasing flow of Christian laymen and women who go out across the world in business, industry and government and who do so with a deep conviction that God calls them to witness for Him in all of life. The churches should be alive to the strategic importance of the spread of the Gospel by such lay people'." -- p. .
