Archbishop Carey became a patron of the Aids Care Education and Training (ACET), one of the UK's leading AIDS charities. ACET, a Christian charity, is also active in Uganda and Romania.
Representatives of the Oriental Orthodox churches met with delegates from the Anglican Communion, under the joint chairmanship of the Rt. Rev. John Dennis and Archbishop Yegische Gizirian, for five days of friendly discussions. The Oriental Orthodox churches represented were: the Syrian (Jacobite) Orthodox Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Armenian Orthodox Church, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Indian Orthodox Church.
The topics examined were: "1. Exchange of students and Theological Literature"; "2. The Use of Scripture"; "3. Christology"; "4. Regional Forums"; and "5. Future Prospects".
Participants included the Rev. Canon Harold Nahabedian, rector of St. Mary Magdalene, Diocese of Toronto, Anglican Church of Canada.
